EyeLock To Exhibit Secure Iris Biometric Capability on SD835 at MWC 2017

Even though the majority if people like to attend the MWC in order to see the latest handsets and gadgets, this is not all the event has to offer. Attendees can also take a look at what certain hardware and software manufacturers worked on this past year. EyeLock will be one of the companies to showcase the results of their work at the Mobile World Congress 2017. To be more exact, the company will demonstrate its secure iris biometric capability on a Snapdragon 835 mobile platform. Those who would like to see this can check out Qualcomm’s booth. This is where the magic will take place.

EyeLock will demonstrate its scanner on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform. This processor contains the Qualcomm Haven security platform. The platform consists of a clever combination of hardware, software and biometrics technologies. Thanks to all of these, the platform is able to provide additional security features for online banking and payments. Of course, the platform also includes hardware-based user authentication, device attestation, and device security. The Snapdragon 835 platform doesn’t stop at a simple fingerprint scanner. In order to offer a higher level of security, it also provides the user with a Secure Camera—a camera-based biometric solution for iris and facial recognition.

At this time, there are only a few smartphones featuring an iris scanner. However, the use of biometrics in smartphones and tablets will most likely see a great change in the near future. According to Sy Choudhury, senior director of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., by 2018, most new smartphones released in the world will include biometrics. Of course, the main feature will probably be the fingerprint scanner. Even so, if the majority of smartphones will include biometrics, it’s safe to assume that the number of gadgets with an iris scanner will also rise.

The iris scanner is more sophisticated than a fingerprint reader. EyeLock’s proprietary iris authentication technology examines more than 240 unique iris characteristics of each eye and provides a fast, user-friendly experience with a natural sensing distance of roughly 60 cm. Given the fact that an iris scanner is usually combined with a fingerprint sensor, the additional security is quite impressive. The iris scanner alone should be enough to protect our gadgets. When combined with other biometrics, it should be unpenetrable. If you are interested in this technology, feel free to check out the Qualcomm booth at the MWC 2017 in Barcelona next week.
