iPad Air vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1″: The Two Giants

Undecided about what tablet to buy? TGC has your back, especially when it comes comparing Apple and Samsung (always a great rivalry to examine). While Apple focuses on it’s own devices, Samsung literally comes out with something identical, yet more powerful (on paper that is). It begs the question of preference, and ultimately the suject of this comparison: would you rather go with the Apple iPad Air? Or the 10.1″ Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro?

When it comes to the “build quality” of both devices, Samsung and Apple have created very professional tablets. The Air has a premium aluminum finish (it’s solid, shiny, and really aesthetically nice), but it can a little hard to grip. The Tab Pro has a imitation leather finish (stitches included) and a better grip.

The dimensions and the weight of the devices is quite interesting. Both tablets weight 469 grams. The iPad Air is 240 mm in length, 169.5 mm wide, and 7.5 mm thick. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab Pro is 243.1 mm in length, 171.4 mm wide, and 7.3 mm thick.

Now, for the Galaxy Tab Pro, the resolution may seem good on paper, but the ppi reveals all. The iPad Air has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 (and 264 ppi). The Galaxy Tab Pro is 2560 x 1600 (and 299 ppi). You would think that makes a difference, but the naked eye will not be able to tell the difference between the pixels. Essentially, they’re both good resolutions.

Let’s take a look at the processor and memory. The iPad Air is powered by a Dual Core A7 that clocks in 1.4 GHz (and includes 1 gigabyte of DDR3 RAM). As for the Galaxy Tab Pro, you can either get the Wifi model (powered by the Samsung Exynos octa-core processor) or the LTE model (powered by the Snapdragon 800 Quad Core). Both Tab Pro models have 2 gigabytes of DDR3 RAM. While iPad users won’t be able to have additional storage on their tablet, Samsung users have the advantage of a microSD slot (meaning more memory).

Pricing wise, you’re looking at $499 for the tablets.

If you’re big on software, the iPad runs the latest iOS (8.4) while Samsung announced not too long ago the Tab Pro series was due to receive the 5.1.1 Lollipop update sometime soon.

And if you’re big on using the camera for your tablet, the iPad Air has a 5 megapixel rear-facing shooter (1080p recording) and a 1.2 megapixel front facing shooter (720p recording). The Tab Pro has a 8 megapixel rear shooter (1080p recording) and a 2 megapixel front facing shooter (also 1080p recording).

The batteries for both devices are powerful, but depending on how much you use the tablet, it’ll either last 10 hours or the entire day. What are your thoughts on the tablets? Let me know in the comments below.
